Grand Piano

Based on an overhead photo of a Yamaha grand which was projected onto a canvas and painted using mostly liquid metallic paints. The circle, music staves and blue dots were added to provide some visual balance once the piano was completed. With the exception of the colour swirls on the left side, this is the most technically accurate piano painting I have attempted.

On a personal note, the creation of this painting culminated a four month period where I had been ignoring signs of an oncoming elbow tendonitis.  My compulsion to paint drove me to ignore the early signs. The extreme detail required in drawing all the lines of the harp, body & keyboard triggered a full blown tendonitis condition which crippled my right hand for a period of 3 months. During those months, I couldn’t play piano, couldn’t even hold a pencil. It was a challenging time as outputting creative is an unstoppable force within me.

Sketched in January of 2005, it was finally completed in May of that year.
