Balalaika Quintet

The canvas is subdivided into four uneven rectangles whose edges each reveal half an instrument, the balalaika appearing on the far right above the keyboard.

In addition to the instruments’ half bodies, their respective tuning pegs are represented with heavy dots of paint at the top of the invisible fingerboards.

The somber overall shade of this canvas, a departure form my usual bright choices, represents the synaesthetic colors that balalaika music often conjures in my mind.
