String Trio

This painting began with five straight lines fanning randomly downwards from the upper-right corner of the surface.

Those random lines transformed into the outlines of the fingerboards. Once the fiddles were complete and painted, I noticed that the C-shaped waists of the violin bodies resembled Spock-like ears, which inspired the addition of facial features.  The simple pencil lined, expressionless faces played against the strong magenta of the violins’ bodies project an eeriness and etherealness.
