Giant Steps

In the period when I was first experimenting with foamboard cutouts, I created a group of pianos initially intended to be small gifts to friends. Instead, this group of irregularly shaped pianos was randomly assembled them onto a canvas shadowed by a magenta-on-magenta background.  When complete, it looked to me like a walking giant .

The title is borrowed from the John Coltrane composition “Giant Steps”, one of the most challenging pieces for improvisors in the jazz repertoire.

Mixed media on acrylic on canvas  14 x 18
